It is not funded by the government; it is run by hundreds of employees and volunteers around the world. The waiting list to volunteer at the CLT USO has about 125 names on it. Winners were selected based on results from the annual TellUSO Sound Off Survey, which was completed by more than 16,000 service members and their families worldwide in the fall of 2012. By asking service members and their families to evaluate the usefulness of USO services, they can identify areas for improvement and help set priorities. The awards honor USO Centers for their commitment and service to America’s service members and military families.

When a fallen service member comes through Charlotte, a select group of volunteers on the CLT USO Honors Support Team is with them every step of the way. A reading room in the back of the lounge can transform into a private area for Gold Star families. The Honor Support Team was recently recognized with the Airport Chaplains’ Compassion Award for the impactful work they do. Located in the main atrium of the terminal, Minute Suites offer the perfect place to rejuvenate during an extended layover.

One of those dedicated volunteers was Judy Hosmer who donated well over 3,273 hours of her time supporting service members and their families over the past ten years. Although Covid-19 restrictions were in place, soldiers were still able to enjoy a warm welcome! The strain of traveling can take its toll on anyone, but especially on our service members and their families. In addition to the daily stresses and duties of life in the military, many service members may be traveling far from home, or on their way to their next duty station or deployment.

We are one of the largest organizations dedicated to supporting the active duty Armed Forces community, rather than veterans. The USO Lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) stands as a comforting refuge for service members and their families, offering a serene escape amidst the hustle and bustle of travel. Nestled within the airport, the USO Lounge presents an array of amenities and services designed to elevate the travel experience for military personnel.

Without the need to re-clear security, passengers can spend more time relaxing in the lounge before their flight. The 2 furthest gates are just a 15-minute walk from each other, but it’s still advisable to leave plenty of time to walk from a lounge to your departure gate. Unlike many high school or college courses, where you may have been in class studying around six hours a day, the Army trains for about hours a day, 6 days a week. The USO’s mission is to strengthen America’s military by connecting them to family, home, and country. USO staff, volunteers, and partners all came together to host and greet the new recruits throughout the day as they began their journey back home for the holidays to be reunited with loved ones. This guide is for informational purposes only to assist with your planning.

Military spouses may be traveling alone with their children while their spouse is out to sea. Some service members might just have had a flight delay and are now stranded with nowhere to go. The CLT USO is a place where active service members and their families can feel at ease. They can grab a snack, a cup of coffee or a soda and relax in a comfy recliner. The lounge has computers for personal use and official military business. There are gaming systems, phone chargers, books and no shortage of warm, friendly people to talk to.
